Adding details of UCL's electronic journal holdings to your results in PubMed

You can now link directly from your results in PubMed to the UCL Library Services journal holdings. To activate this, follow the instructions below.

1. Go to PubMed: http://www.pubmed.gov

2. Register for a My NCBI account if you have not already done so. To do this, click on the link on the My NCBI link at the top right of the screen and follow the instructions. If you already have a My NCBI account, sign in.

3. Once you are logged in (your username will appear on the top right of the screen), click the My NCBI link on the top right of the screen

4. Scroll down to Filters and click on “manage filters” at the bottom of the page

5. Where it says “select category” select the linkout radio button

6. Type UCL in the search box (where it says “search with term” )

7. UCL Library services will come up

8. Tick both boxes (Filter and Link Icon)

9. Once you start searching you will find a link to the full-text UCL resources on the right hand side of your search.

For this to work on subsequent occasions, you must sign in to MyNCBI before starting your searching

How to Practice Evidence-Based Child Health course 19th – 21st October 2011

This 3 day introductory course aims to help practitioners become more efficient at using the best available evidence in their clinical and policy decisions.

The course consists of plenary seminars, small group problem-solving and appraisal sessions and practical training sessions on searching the literature to support evidence-based practice.

Key features are an emphasis on multi-professional groups and a high tutor-participant ratio, with tutors such as Professor Ruth Gilbert, Director, Centre of Evidence-Based Child Health, UCL Institute of Child Health, London.

Who Should Come?
The concepts taught apply to all areas of health and social care and therefore the course is suitable for any health or social care practitioner. Examples relevant to the care of children will be used throughout the course.
Previous experience in using research evidence to inform decisions is an advantage but not essential.

Cost: £450. Course materials and catering included.

• Automatic searching for spelling variations and name variants, e.g. singular and plural forms of words, English and American spellings.
• The ability to search for records using a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
• Access to Researcher ID from within Web of Science, so that your published works can be directly added to Researcher ID.
• Free access to Endnote Web from Web of Science.
• A “Related Records” feature viewable in All Databases search results.
• A mobile site so that you can use Web of Knowledge from your phone: m.webofknowledge.com
• The citation report now includes an “Average Citation Count per Paper” column and a “Sum of the Times Cited without Self-Citations” count.

Latest version of the TRIP Database

A new version of TRIP has just been released - http://www.tripdatabase.com

There are some new features, including:
• Translate introduced, allowing users to translate the search results and subsequent links into one of six languages (Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese and Welsh).
• DOI (Digital object identifier) is displayed, this is to facilitate the identification of full-text articles.
• Clinical trials are now highlighted via a link to clinicaltrials.gov. The search term used on the site is sent to guidelines.gov and the results returned to TRIP.
• Clinical calculators related to the search terms are now displayed.
• The ability to restrict the results to new research only.
• The site is significantly faster
• New results page design
• Incorporating new content including medical education, and patient decision aids as well as enhanced content from social media and videos (now over 6,100)

eUCLid and eBooks now on eAccess service

eUCLid (the library catalogue) has been added to the list of library catalogues on the eAccess machines this means that users will be able to browse the catalogue from the machines without having to search separately on another PC.

Also there is now an Electronic Books option on the eAccess service (below Electronic Journals) which allows access to UCL's eBooks through eUCLid.

How to report problems with the UCL ejournals

UCL ejournals problems can now be reported using the following problem report form: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/e-res_prob.php

This form is linked to the SFX menus and ejournals pages as well as being linked to our ejournals page:

The form automatically provides the ejournal team with information about the user's location and status, and is sent to members of the IS group as well as the ejournals team, both making for a more streamlined response.

Pilot project extends access to electronic resources across UCL Partners to end of 2011

A pilot programme has been jointly established between Academic Health Science Centres (including UCL Partners) and key science, technology and medicine publishers, co-ordinated by JISC Collections (the UK academic community e-content procurement and negotiation service).
The pilot allows universities at the centre of AHSCs to extend access to selected subscribed content for their partner NHS organisations. The pilot is running until the end of 2011 in the first instance.

Access is available for all staff of Great Ormond Street to the following UCL subscribed resources to the end of 2011 in the first instance:

• ca. 60 Nature Publishing Group journals
• ca. 250 Adis and Lippincott journals via OVID Online
• Several hundred journals and the Scopus database from Elsevier (ScienceDirect)
• ca. 1,900 SpringerLink journals
• Thomson-Reuters Web of Knowledge databases, including Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports and BIOSIS Previews, as well as EndNote Web

NHS Athens accounts are required to access these resources. Please note that users with a UCL username and password have access to these resources already through UCL.

All resources can be accessed from MyAthens at www.openathens.net – select Login to MyAthens and go to the Local resources tab to see the links to the resources

The journals can additionally be accessed directly at www.library.nhs.uk/booksandjournals/journals – click on Login now and enter your NHS Athens username and password to access the subscribed content.

How to use the GOSH encrypted stick on the e-access machines

1-Before you do anything, insert your encrypted stick in the USB slot.

2-Wait till you get the USB Locked Icon, then click where it says USB Locked, click here.

3-Now log in and enter your password to unlock the device.

4-Minimize the MXI software window and click launch journals to access the e-resources as normal.

5-To save your articles click on:
USB drive # 1 (X:)
if you have an old GOSH encrypted stick

USB drive # 2 (Y:)
if you have a new GOSH encrypted stick

6-When you are finished, log out of the electronic resources,
then click on the USB icon to log out of MXI access as well and lock your device.

Both GOSH encrypted sticks are now working on the library e-access machines. We recently had problems as the e-access machines wouldn’t recognize the new GOSH encrypted stick. The problem has now been resolved by UCL ISD and GOSH staff can use both encrypted sticks in order to download UCL ejournals articles

Health and Psychosocial Instruments provides ready access to information on measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/ manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests) in the health fields, psychosocial sciences and organizational behaviour.

To access Health and Psychosocial Instruments go to http://ovidsp.ovid.com/athens/redirect.cgi, log in with your Athens username and password and select Health and Psychosocial Instruments from the list.

SFX article recommendation service

Following a successful trial, UCL has now launched a new article recommendation service, based on SFX. This works in a similar way to Amazon’s “Customers who bought this item also bought…” suggestions. It recommends articles that are similar to the one to which you’ve linked using SFX.

The recommendations are based on actual (anonymised) SFX usage data from SFX customers around the world, including UCL, and take account of articles viewed in the same session by significant numbers of users. They offer another mechanism for finding articles on a topic, as a complement to systematic literature searches.

The Institute of Child Health library website has been completely revised and re-launched in order to follow the style of the new institute of Child Health website: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ich. The new Institute of Child Health homepage fits with the UCL brand template that ICH had been asked to adopt by the faculty and it provides access to the information which academic and research staff were asked to complete on research interest and publications which is available via the "people" tab.

The website is based on UCL's Silva Content Management System. Silva is a CMS for organizations that manage multiple or complex websites and it is fairly easy to use.

The changeover gave us the opportunity to update all our pages and also to create new pages.

This 10 volume work explores all areas of the discipline in its focused entries on a wide variety of topics in neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry and other related areas of neuroscience. RoamNet available from both library reading rooms

UCL ID cards -some news

UCL ID cards are normally issued by UCL Security Systems in the Andrew Huxley Building. Find a link to a map: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/efd/about/maps/125.gif. The office is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.45pm. You need to bring one form of ID (e.g. bank card, driving licence, your ICH/GOSH card)

Consultants with UCL honorary contracts who cannot get to the Andrew Huxley building over at UCL can send an electronic photo of themselves to securitysystems@ucl.ac.uk and can then send someone else to collect the card. Security Systems won't send the cards by post but they can be collected by their PA for example as long as when they send their photos from their email they state who is going to collect it on their behalf.

The photos need to be similar to passpart photos, so no sun glasses, hats etc.

Evidence for resource-poor settings via TRIP

TRIP, the evidence-based search engine, has launched an initiative to help identify evidence suitable for resource-poor or developing world settings. TRIP is aiming to create a searchable set of data relevant to such settings.

Users of TRIP will be able to click on a 'Developing World' link if they believe an article is appropriate for a resource-poor setting. If two or more separate people click on the link then the article will be deemed suitable for inclusion in this sub-set of TRIP resources.

UK PubMed Central Open Beta service now live

The UK PubMed Central Open Beta service is now live at http://beta.ukpmc.ac.uk

Recently lauched in London it provides a unique, free information resource for biomedical and health researchers. The updated site has additional functionality, features and content. It includes grant reporting and manuscript submission tools presented through a re-designed interface.

Feedback is welcomed and you are encouraged to use the feedback feature which appears on every page of the new site.

Upgrades to the Trip database

A quick update on some new features of the TRIP database(www.tripdatabase.com):

The TRIP Database is a clinical search engine designed to allow clinicians to quickly find answers to their clinical questions using the best available evidence.

Search history - allows the easy creation of combination searches

Related articles - Under each search result is a 'Related' link that works in a similar way to PubMed's related articles. Basically, you find an article you like and pressing 'Related' returns results that are semantically similar.

Labs (http://www.tripdatabase.com/labs) - Two features in this:

1) Search wizard (http://www.tripdatabase.com/search/wizard) - a search based on the PICO model.
2) Related articles (http://www.tripdatabase.com/search/related) - using the same technology as the related articles mentioned above.

BMJ Learning available to GOSH and to ICH staff

Bentham Science Journals Online Trial

New Journal - International Health

Printing from the Cluster PCs

Printing from the "cluster" PCs (ie those requiring UCL logins) has changed.

In line with the other open access/training rooms in ICH we have implemented UCL print charging. This service is explained in more detail at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/is/printcharging/

This means that all printing will be charged to your UCL print account (students are provided with £12 credit for printing at 5p per sheet), and you will need to login to the print workstation in order to print out your references. Instructions are provided next to this terminal.

Additional credit can be purchased on-line at htpps://printcharging.ucl.ac.uk/ or by using the cash payment machines located in the UCL DMS Watson (Science Library).

If you do not want to pay for printing we recommend you download references onto a USB pen.

Library cluster PCs - update

Three of the four "walk-in" PCs are now running. These PCs allow access to the UCL e-journals, NHS Evidence and a wide range of electronic databases. We are still awaiting a printer for these PCs but references may be saved to a USB pen.

To use these PCs, you need to login using your library barcode and PIN (please ask library staff if you don't know your PIN).

Library PC Cluster

Currently we have four PCs working in the Library cluster. To access these you need to login using your UCL computing account. If you wish to print out, there is a separate print workstation, with paper charged at 5p per sheet. Please ask library staff if you need any assistance using these facilities.

We are still awaiting UCL Computing & Library Services attending to the remaining PCs which will allow access to e-journals and databases using your library barcode and PIN. We apologise for the continued inconvenience to GOSH colleagues over the non-availability of these machines.

How to request an inter-library loan

Inter-library loans should be requested online.

You can fill in an online form via the UCL online catalogue at http://library.ucl.ac.uk

Click on the "ILL" option at the top of the library catalogue page. You will need to sign in with your libary barcode (on the back of your ID badge) and PIN number (ask at the library issue desk if you don't know your PIN).

Once you have signed in, choose the material type you want to request, either

book
conference proceeding
report
thesis
journal or journal article

Please complete a separate request form for each item:

multi-volume books - one form per volume required
journal articles - one form per article
multi-articles in a journal issue/conference proceedings - one form per issue/conference

Please note: UK copyright law does not allow more than one article to be photocopied from the same bound issue or volume.

Please remember to read and sign the copyright declaration if requesting a photocopy. To comply with UK copyright law the details and signature must be of the person who requires the photocopied material.

The cost remains at £3.00. If you are planning to pay with a grant, please state this in the box marked "extra information". The £3.00 ILL charge has to be paid on collection.

How to reserve a book online

You can reserve books online only if ALL copies or all those copies with the same loan period are on loan in a particular library site.
You can request standard and one week loans, but NOT overnight or reference copies.
If a book is on loan to somebody else, a due date is shown on the eUCLid catalogue and a Request link is displayed. You are limited to three reservations at any one time.

To place the request via eUCLId:

1) From the eUCLid catalogue record select a copy of the book from the library site and with the loan period you want

2) Click on the Request link on the left-hand side of the screen

3) You will be prompted to enter the following

Barcode (= the number on the back of your library/UCL ID card)
PIN code = the four figure/letter code unique to you (ask at the library issue desk if you don't know yours)
Click Go

4) You will receive an email when the book is ready for you to collect from the issue desk. You have one week to collect an item, after which it will be returned to the shelves.

5) To cancel a request

To cancel a reservation, select Reservations to display your reequests.
Click on the blue number next to the book title
Click on the Delete Reservation button

When you have finished looking at your record, click Reset (at the top of the screen).

UCL ID cards needed to borrow books from the library

From Monday 3rd August, in order to borrow books, ICH staff and students will need to get a UCL card.

This is because records are entered onto the Aleph system directly from UCL registry for students and from UCL HR for staff.

The advantage of this is that ICH staff and students won't need to fill out a form in order to join the library and will use the same card for using all UCL libraries. However you will need to go and collect your UCL card if you haven't got one.

Changes to access for electronic Library resources -Shibboleth

From 1 August 2009, in common with many other UK universities, UCL will no longer be using the "Athens" login for access to electronic library resources. The Athens login service now incurs an institutional subscription.

You may still see links labelled "Athens login" on various resources, but you will have to take a different route to log in.

The easier way to access all resources is through the lists of electronic journals and databases available on the UCL Library Services website ( http://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/ejournal and http://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/database).

This will guarantee that you get free access to all the resources to which you are entitled. If you are on-site you will not need to log in to resources. If you are off-site, you will be prompted for your UCL userid and password automatically.

If you wish you can also login directly from the website of the resource. Previously, you would have looked for a link labelled "Athens login". Now you should instead look for a link labelled something like:

• Institutional Login
• UK Federation Login
• Shibboleth Login

Different resources use different labels, but in each case you will then be asked which institution you belong to, and you can select UCL from a list. This will then take you to the UCL login screen
Institutional Login means that you can use your userid/password from your home institution (UCL) to access the resource (the login you use to access email and other central UCL services).

UK Federation is the group of institutions, including UCL, which uses the new login mechanism.
Shibboleth is the technology behind the new login mechanism (see http://www.ukfederation.org.uk/content/Documents/HowItWorks)

Library Re-opens

Following our re-opening this morning you may like to note the following:

1. Study spaces are now limited and located in the Source area of the library (ie towards the Guilford Street end). Please note there are four study spaces in the area directly facing Guilford Street.

2. Since most of our stock is now located at the UCL Wickford store, we have added instructions on how to request items on this blog, and as an FAQ. You do not need to come to the library in order to request items from store as you can either complete an online request form.

How to request items from the UCL store

From Monday 6th July people will be able to start requesting our books and journals which have been sent to the UCL Store.

How to request items from Store:

There are 3 ways to request Store material:
1. By completing the Web store request form at:

2. By completing the store request form in eUCLid (UCL Library Catalogue)
3. By email to libstore@ucl.ac.uk if you cannot access the form

Please fill in as much detail as possible and do include your full name, contact number or email and Library barcode number.

The UCL Store requires the following information to process requests:
For a periodical: the full journal title and volume/part nos., page nos. and date, plus the location.
For a book: the author's name, the title, the date of the work, and the classmark.
For a thesis: the author's name, the date of the work and the title.

When and how to collect your request

Users can choose to pick up requested Stores material from ICH, the Science, Cruciform, Eastman Dental Institute, Institute of Laryngology & Otology & RNID, Institute of Ophthalmology, LASS, SSEES, Royal Free Hospital Medical and Institute of Orthopaedics Libraries. You must select where they would like to collect the Store Request using the drop-down menu at the top of the form.

Requests made before 7.30 a.m. will be available the same afternoon; requests submitted after that time will be ready for consultation the next working day after 4pm.

Please Note:

There are no deliveries at the weekend.

Store material should be returned from the library it was collected from.

All requests are held for one week only, after which they will be returned to Store

We do not notify readers when material arrives

UCL Theses

Theses must be requested as above. They will be kept at the selected pick-up site for two weeks. They cannot be borrowed and are only available for consultation during Issue Desk opening.

One week closure of the library

Closure of the Reading Room

Due to alterations to the reading room (which will allow the R&D office to move back into the ICH main building), this area of the library will be closed from Monday 22 June through to mid-September.

During this period we hope to maintain library services as best as possible. The main part of the library will remain open as usual. Access to the library photocopiers and PCs (including those connected to the GOSH network) will be unaffected by the building work. "Out of hours" access to the library will still be available, although there will be far fewer study spaces during this period.

The following summarises how to locate stock during this period:

Current journals - these will still be accessible in the main part of the library
Recent journals - many of these will still be accessible in the main part of the library. If you cannot find the title you are after, please ask library staff
Older journals - you will probably need to request these items from the UCL store. Items requested from store should be delivered to us on the following day. A limited number of older journals are being retained locally, such as those not available electronically.
Books - most will be temporarily located in the Wickford store and you will need to request these items from store. The only exception is nursing and allied health titles, which we will be retaining locally.
Source collection - access to this collection is unaffected by the building work.
PhDs and theses - most of these have already been transferred to the Wickford store.

EThOS (Electronic Theses Online Service)

EThOS is a new British Library service aimed at providing digital copies of UK PhD theses direct to the researcher, over the web.

It is a database containing over 250,000 UK theses with the added functionality to enable the requesting of digital copies of selected theses.Researchers do not need to be registered with the system to search the database, but will need to register if they wish to request a digital copy of a thesis.

Many of the participating UK institutions support Open Access to their theses, so downloads of these digital and digitised theses are free to the researcher. UCL is an Open Access sponsor.

Where a thesis must be digitised before supply, there will be a short delay before it is accessible. However, the requester will be informed when the thesis is available and can then log on to the system and download the thesis. The theses are supplied as zipped pdfs.

Alternative formats (CD or paper) are also available for purchase.EThOS can only offer the theses of participating institutions. Whilst it is expected that a large number of institutions will participate, the British Library cannot supply from an institution which chooses not to. In this case, it may be possible to obtain a copy via UCL Library Services' Inter Library Loan Service.

After today the majority of the National Library for Health website functions will continue as people currently know them – however the website has been rebranded in both colour (blue) and in name – NHS Evidence information resources. The NLH URL will still reroute people to the site for the time being and also be able to be redirected from the NHS Evidence portal to the information resources website.

ICH PhDs and Theses

All ICH PhDs and Theses have now been sent to the UCL Store at Wickford. Any of these may be requested via the Stores Service for delivery the following day (assuming the request is made before 3pm).

This is the first stage in the major relocation of our stock which is part of the redevelopment plans for the reading room area. Major work starts on the reading room from the end of June 2009 and we will keep you updated here.

SFX links in google scholar

Google Scholar can display SFX links that show whether articles are available to UCL users. As in other databases, the SFX links indicate if an article is available electronically via UCL’s subscriptions (or freely), and also allow you to search the UCL Library catalogue (and other catalogues) for print.

A large link, labelled “SFX@UCL - Fulltext” will appear if UCL has the item electronically. A smaller link, labelled simply “SFX@UCL”, below the citation, indicates that UCL may have the item in print.

The easiest way to see UCL’s SFX links in Google Scholar is to use the link to Google Scholar in the UCL Libraries A-Z databases list: . (An alternative is to set UCL in your Scholar Preferences.)

Primal Pictures features more than 6,500 three-dimensional anatomy models that focus on individual organs, regions of the body and anatomical systems. The models are derived from medical scan data and adapted by graphic specialists. Animations illustrate accurate anatomical function, biomechanics and movement, as well as treatments and surgical procedures.

e-Learning for Healthcare Adolescent Health Project

e-LfH (e-learning for healthcare), in partnership with The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, have now launched the Adolescent Health e-Learning webpage: http://www.e-lfh.org.uk/projects/ah/index.html.

The Adolescent Health e-learning project, delivered by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH), is committed to improving the health outcomes and experiences of all young people who come into the care of healthcare professionals. The materials have been written by subject specialists and experts in their particular field and have been subjected to extensive peer review.

A range of modules has been divided into topics and sessions, pitched at differing levels to suit the educational needs of a variety of healthcare professionals working with adolescents.

BMJ Learning

First time users will need to register on the BMJ Learning website after they have logged in with their Athens username and password, and then "Sign in". If users already have a username and password with BMJ Learning, this can be used inconjunction with their NHS Athens username.

BMJ Learning is the leading continuing professional development (CPD) and postgraduate training website for doctors and other healthcare professionals.

NHS Evidence

From today, 1st April 2009, the National Library for Health (NLH) has transferred to NICE and become NHS Evidence. NHS Evidence will go live on 30 April 2009.

NHS Evidence will provide an integrated online portal and a comprehensive source of fast, free, relevant and trustworthy information about clinical and non-clinical evidence and best practice. Health and social care professionals have been closely involved with the design and development of the service, and it has been tested by clinicians throughout its development to ensure it meets their needs. The first version incorporates the best of the National Library for Health; further enhancements will be in place by autumn 2009 and a strong emphasis on quality assurance of information is expected.

'How to Practice Evidence-Based Child Health'

20th - 22nd May 2009

This introductory course aims to help practitioners become more efficient at using the best available evidence in their clinical and policy decisions.

The course consists of plenary seminars, small group problem-solving and appraisal sessions and practicals on searching the literature to support evidence-based practice. Key features include learning based on small multi-professional groups, a pre-course study pack, a high tutor-student ratio and opportunities for hands on searching of a variety of electronic evidence-based resources with tutor support.

Who Should Come?

The concepts taught apply to all areas of health and social
care and therefore the course is suitable for any health or
social care practitioner. Examples relevant to the care of children will be used throughout the course.
Previous experience in using research evidence to inform decisions is an advantage but not essential.

Cost: £450. Course materials and catering included.

Merger with UCL Library Services

As of 1 January 2009 the Library and its staff will be managed directly via UCL Library Services. Users of the Library should notice no difference in the quality of our service and we look forward to working more closely with colleagues in other UCL medical site libraries. One change planned for this year is to change our catalogue from the existing "Unicorn" system to UCL's "eUCLid" catalogue system. This is scheduled to take place this summer. We will keep you informed of other developments through this blog.

Improvements of the administration of the NHS Athens accounts

Release 4.4 of the National Library for Health website included a number of improvements to the NHS Athens self registration processes as well as making the benefits of registration clearer.

The most visible change for existing account holders, is the login area on the National Library for Health website that has been relocated to the top right corner of the page, providing a consistent place for login/logout.

From the header users will also be able to access a new My Account page that includes information about their account and provides links for them to change their registered organisation (if they move from one Trust to another, for example). They can also change their email address and/or password.

Further improvements include:
- Being able to sign-in with either your username or your registered NHS Athens account e-mail address
- Being able to recover forgotten passwords more easily
- Being able to get an automatic email 28 days before your account is due to expire
- Being able to make an online request to have the account renewed (renewal is not an automatic process)

Researcher ID and the h-index

One of the measures now commonly used to assess researcher profiles is the H Factor, a citation index. This is increasingly being used in processes such as assessment of institutions, for instance as a metric to demonstrate excellence of the paediatric theme within UCL Partners, as well as in consideration for senior promotions.

There is a variety of web based tools to calculate H Factor, but each operates differently and therefore gives slightly different results. UCL has opted to use researcherid.com (an e-mail was sent from David Price to encourage all researchers to retrieve this information).

The library is offering clinics on how to register for a Researcher ID, how to find your h-index bd how to create a PDF with the details.

The first clinic is on 12th December 10.00-11.00 in training room 1 of the Institute of Child Health.

Access to the library after hours

Staff and postgraduate students who are members of the library and who work or study at ICH or GOS can obtain access to the library at any time during normal Institute opening hours, from 08.00 – 22.45, seven days a week.

To access the library outside staffed hours, your photo-ID badge must be encoded at the ICH reception desk. This will only be done after you have registered to join the library.

If you wish to stay in the library after 21.00, you must sign in at the ICH reception desk.

If anyone has problem accessing the library after hours they need to be referred to the ICH Reception Desk where advice as to how they might obtain out of
hours access in the future will be given.

If someone has left something in The Library, Reception staff can escort
them to retrieve their property.

Oxford Language Dictionaries Online

Oxford Language Dictionaries Online is now available to UCL users. This resource comprises fully searchable bilingual dictionaries in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish. The content available is the full A-Z text (both sides of the dictionary) from Oxford’s unabridged bilingual dictionaries (French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish); the Chinese dictionary is currently the Pocket Oxford Chinese.) Supplementary material from the dictionaries, and study guides, are also available.

Who’s Who and Who Was Who

UCL has a trial of Who’s Who and Who Was Who via Oxford University Press http://www.ukwhoswho.com/ until 16 November 2008.

We have had access to these databases through KnowUK (Who’s Who; Who Was Who.), but this has been discontinued.

Who’s Who contains more than 33,000 short biographies of living noteworthy and influential individuals, from all walks of life, worldwide. Who Was Who comprises over 100,000 entries from the archives of Who’s Who dating back to 1898.

New Database: Scopus

UCL has a subscription to a new indexing and abstracting database,
Scopus, from Elsevier. It covers science, technology, medicine and social sciences.

This is available both onsite and offsite with UCL username and password at the following URL:

Note that offsite login for UCL for this resource does not use Athens,
it uses the new mechanism (Institutional Login) which is already in use
for resources such as OvidSP Medline.
