This report has been published by the Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health (CEMACH). It is the first report of a national confidential enquiry specifically focussed on child deaths. There were six key findings: Key Finding 1: The feasibility of confidential enquiries in children: CEMACH recommended that it should prepare a strategy for the future development of the national confidential enquiry for child health in liaison with the National Patient Safety Agency, the Department of Health, the Department for Children, Schools and Families and other relevant bodies. Reference Manager is a software package which allows you to quickly and accurately import citations from a database such as Medline or CINAHL, then generate bibliographies in different output styles. It can be used from within Microsoft Word to insert references and footnotes into a document and automatically generate a reference list in a chosen output style, e.g. for publication in a specific journal. This makes it an invaluable tool in any work that requires tracking of reference lists, such as clinical audit, guidelines writing or systematic reviewing. The Postgraduate Medical Education department are pleased to announce that two copies of the Reference Manager software package have been purchased and installed on the computers in the Doctors’ Mess. In collaboration with the Friends of the Children of Great Ormond Street Library, training in using the software will be offered on a regular basis in Weston House from July. The My Journals (TDnet) service at http://journals.library.nhs.uk has been extended until 31st December 2008. This will allow the NLH link resolver A-Z list to develop in parallel to this service. The specification for a new Table of Content service is being scoped by the Link resolver delivery team http://www.library.nhs.uk/forlibrarians/d2d/linkresolver .

The National Library for Health has extended the Dialog Datastar contract for a further month, until 31st July. During July NLH will release 4.1 of Search 2.0 with further improvements and enhancement to ensure the Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (HDAS) is fit for purpose. This is the FINAL extension of the Dialog Datastar service.

Premature babies undergoing medical procedures may be in pain even if there is no obvious physical hint of it, brain scans reveal. The BBC Health website reports that researchers from University College London found changes in brain oxygen levels - a response to pain - did not match other signs. The findings suggest commonly used scales to rate pain in babies may produce misleadingly low scores. The study is published in the Public Library of Science journal .

The LWW Journal Legacy Archive gives immediate access to the backfiles of 220 journals in major clinical and medical specialties, including nursing, infectious disease, surgery, and cardiology.
