Sustainability: Christmas Switch Off campaign 2022

Did you know that over the 2021 Christmas period, staff and student help to save 173 tonnes of carbon through by switching off items that would have otherwise been left running? That’s equivalent to planting 2,883 trees! It also saved UCL a Tree-Mendous £114,374! Help UCL reach its goal of reducing energy consumption by 40% for the buildings to become net zero carbon by 2024 by SWITCHING OFF this Christmas! Book returns bin

We are pleased to let you know that our users can now return their library books when the library is closed, or, if for any reason you are unable to access the library, please just drop off your books in the returns bin on the ground floor in the ICH Main building reception area. Please remember to only return books that were borrowed from the GOS ICH Library. Books borrowed from other libraries must be returned to where they were originally borrowed. You can also drop off USB pen drives that you have borrowed. When you drop-off books in our returns bin after 6pm, your books will be returned the next working day. If you have any queries about your loans, the first place to check is your UCL Explore Library account . Your Health Collection – books and digital support resources from NHS Health Education England

  NHS Knowledge and Library Services are working with The Reading Agency to provide a new collection of 10 books and 30 online resources to NHS staff via their library. In a new initiative, the collection will also be given to 120 prison libraries as well. The theme of the collection focuses on supporting better general health, such as ageing well, menopause, men’s health, life as a trans person and better mental wellbeing. You can find a copy of each of the 10 books in the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health Library Wellbeing collection ( in the alcove by the printers next the entrance of the Quiet Study Room.  All books from our library can be borrowed for 8 weeks and renewed by simply signing into your online library account .  If you work for the NHS you can register for an NHS OpenAthens account to access a wide range of selected evidence-based, healthcare and health sciences electronic resources.   If you have a question about any of these wellbeing resources pleas

UCL’s Sustainability Awards Ceremony 2022 - GOS ICH Library wins Gold again!

Congratulations to all winners at yesterday's UCL Sustainability awards! We are also very excited to have achieved the gold award yet again. A special thank you to the Sui Jing Ly for all her work on keeping the Library wonderfully verdant and reminding us of the all simple ways we can act sustainably in our everyday lives. NHS Knowledge and Library Services Awareness Week, Day 4: Bookable meeting and study space for NHS users

Did you know that the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health Library has a meeting room with a capacity of up to 8 people as well as an AV presentation screen for NHS staff? We recommend that you book in advance (in person, via email or telephone), our contact details can be found on our Library webpage . We always welcome feedback from our users to improve our services and build a library around your needs. Please complete our NHS Knowledge Library Services Awareness Week  feedback form and let us know if there is there anything we can do to improve your experience as an NHS library member. The UCL GOS ICH Library also has an online suggestions board as well as a physical suggestions box so that library users have the opportunity to tell us what they they think of the service and how we can improve. The physical suggestions box is located by the lockers as you enter the library, and to post a suggestion online please visit  our virtual suggestions board .

  Did you know that all Trust staff and students can apply for library membership? To apply, fill in the online membership form . Your home library is UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health Library. It’s got 7 GOSH-networked computers, 105 study desks ( with power sockets for your laptop, access to Wi-Fi ), a Quiet Study room, loanable lockers, and holds specialist collections on Paediatrics, Allied Health and Nursing. There are also 5 Explore computers which give you access to UCL Library licensed electronic resources ( journals and databases ). If you have new starters in your department or you would like a refresher of what the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health Library offers for NHS Staff, you can contact us for a library induction. NHS Knowledge and Library Services Awareness Week, Day 2: Skills training for NHS Library members

Did you know that the library offers a range of skills training to help you find, evaluate, and manage evidence and information more efficiently? Our specialist library staff provide online sessions on literature searching using Ovid databases (Medline, Embase and PsycINFO), PubMed, reference management software including Mendeley, and much much more.  You can book sessions around your availability. We have also produced  training materials and guidance  to support the development of information literacy and library skills to inform clinical practice, study, and research.  You can contact us for further information on any of these services or to arrange an individual appointment, please email the GOS ICH Library team at ich.library@ucl.ac.uk.

NHS Knowledge and Library Services Awareness Week, Day 1: Online resources for NHS users, including NHS Knowledge and Library Hub

D id you know that the new NHS Knowledge and Library Hub brings together all online library and evidence resources in one place? The Hub offers an intuitive search experience and provides access to all content available to you, including resources funded at national and local level. Content available through the Hub includes: ·          over 7,000 electronic journals ·          electronic books, including OUP handbooks ·          one-click access to full-text, request a copy, or contact your home library ·          clinical decision support tools such as UpToDate and BMJ Best Practice ·          NICE pathways and guidelines ·          databases like Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL and PsycInfo. An NHS OpenAthens account is needed to access most resources – you can register for NHS OpenAthens for free if you don’t have an account already.   Did you know that next week (13-17 June 2022) is NHS Knowledge and Library Services Awareness Week?  UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health Library will be highlighting what we offer to our NHS users. Each day next week we will focus on a range of library services and show you how you can access these services. It is not to be missed!  Join us on Twitter  @UCLGoshICH  next week. Plant cuttings giveaway!

The library is part of UCL's Green Impact initiative which is organised by Sustainable UCL - a department which raises awareness by providing helpful information to resources on how we, in the UCL Community, can help contribute in a positive way to climate change. You may have noticed their work on our social media, or perhaps on the Library's Green Impact noticeboard? They’re a great resource for students and staff looking for ways to get into sustainability. This year, as the library's Green Impact champion, and as a keen home gardener, Jing Ly, has been growing a small collection of houseplants in the library to replace all the ones that had, unfortunately, died during lockdown. Now that many of the plants are thriving again, we'd like to offer some of these to our users to enjoy in their home, halls of residence, hospital ward, or,wherever you like. Caring for a plant is an easy and fun way to get into sustainability, and introduce a little verdant calm in to your

Don't forget to Switch Off this Easter!

Did you know that a computer left on overnight for a year creates enough co2 emissions to fill a double decker bus? Small actions such as switching off your PC, or mobile device at night can help! As we prepare to wind-down for the spring break, we'd like to remind you of UCL's sustainability commitments to reduce its energy consumption by 40%, and for its buildings to become net zero carbon by 2024. And w hile UCL has switched to 100% renewable electricity, the most effective way to reduce our carbon footprint is to reduce our energy usage, which you can help with by participating in the Easter Switch Off.    Find out ways you can get involved in the Easter Switch off campaign by visiting the UCL Sustainable website  for tips on cutting down on your carbon foot print, and more. NHS England Open Athens Resources

  Please note that there are changes to the following services from today (1 st   April 2022): 1. The  HDAS  interface to searching databases is no longer available. However, the good news is that all the databases that were available through HDAS are still available to GOSH staff though alternative interfaces. You can find alternative links to the databases that were available through HDAS on our  website .   2.  The  NICE Journals A-Z  list has been replaced by a new service called  Browzine . You can use this service to search or browse for the journals that are available to you with an NHS England Open Athens account. 3.  NICE Evidence  search has closed. This is not being replaced, but GOSH staff can now access the  TRIP Pro  database from anywhere by logging in with an NHS England Open Athens account. Trip Pro is a clinical search engine which finds references to high quality research evidence. It  includes more functionality and content than the basic version of TRIP.  Through T

Over the next 28 days you will find a range of free talks, workshops and activity-events on offer to  the UCL community.  Are you interested in how Fairtrade? Or t he politics of climate change and how it can inform green public policies, perhaps? M aybe you'd like some tips on how to adopt sustainable practises in your science laboratory?
