Change in loan limit for UCL staff

We regularly review our library service provision to staff, students and external visitors. One aspect of the service which was reviewed via a benchmarking exercise during the latter part of last year was the loan allowance for all library users.
UCL Library Committee agreed in December 2015 that the loan limit for staff at UCL will be set at 40 items from 1 September 2016. This change maintains a generous limit for staff, whilst balancing this against the need to manage the Library’s print stock and ensure that it is available for users at the point of need.

UCL Discovery Plus – Open Access repository for Great Ormond Street Hospital researchers

Great Ormond Street staff  have now the  opportunity to make their published research more accessible and increase the potential impact of their work.UCL Discovery Plus is a new service, hosted by UCL for NHS staff.  GOSH staff can use it to make their articles and other research outputs freely available for anyone to access, via a Google search, wherever possible.Your work will also form part of a record of research activity at Great Ormond Street Hospital
NB. UCL authors should maintain their publication record and deposit copies of research publications using the RPS system, as detailed via UCL's Open Access pages.
How to deposit your work Simply go to the UCL Discovery Plus deposit form, enter the relevant details and upload your document. UCLH library staff will check copyright permissions* before making it openly available.

Medicines learning portal

Opening times reminder

A reminder that at 18:30 each weekday afternoon the building goes into restricted access – anyone arriving or remaining in the building is required to sign in at the front desk.
Additionally to this the internal perimeter of the building is locked down, this means there is no access via the Gallery in/out of GOSH nor any access into the building via Goods Inward (access into the building by these means is limited to 08:00 to 18:30).
Outside of core hours (08:00 to 18:30 Mon-Fri) there is reduced access to the building and all access is via the main entrance and requires sign in.
To summarise: Weekdays – Building opens for full access at 08:00, with reduced access after the end of core hours at 18:30 and shuts at 23:00 Weekends – Always reduced access from 09:00 to 21:00 Bank Holidays – Always reduced access from 09:00 to 14:00

Heather Chesters - Associate Fellow

We would like to congratulate Heather Chesters, the Deputy Librarian for achieving the status of Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. 
HEA Fellowship is an international recognition of a commitment to professionalism in teaching and learning in higher education  For more information please see the  following webpage: This qualification is well deserved and very fitting for Heather as she is the main trainer at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health Library. Heather  runs our scheduled sessions on Literature searching, PubMed and Endnote as well as helping  our users on a one to one basis.

We have made our display cabinet available for our user’s displays

There is a glass display cabinet in the entrance to our library. This cabinet was a gift in the memory of George Henderson Macnab, Consultant Surgeon to the Hospital for Sick Children 1946-1967 & Chairman of the Academic Board of the Institute of Child Health 1950-1967. For many years it has been home to a display on the subject of J. M. Barrie’s bequest of the royalties for Peter Pan to the Hospital. We have now decided to make the cabinet available to our users for appropriate non-commercial displays.The cabinet is suitable for smaller research posters, for instance. We hope for a vibrant and relevant turn-over of displays and we trust that George Henderson Macnab would have approved.

Digitised course reading - CLA licence change + BoB

Two pieces of good news for teaching staff!  Summarised below, with links to further information…
1.The CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) has announced an increase to the amount we can digitise under the CLA licence.  A new licence has been negotiated and includes a few favourable changes including the limit of 10% or 1 chapter (previously 5% or 1 chapter).  This is quite the headline after years of the 5% limit!  Already teaching staff are benefitting from being able to digitise more as the TLS start to process Term 1 readings.
2.Box of Broadcasts (BoB) gets an upgrade this summer.  BoB makes available broadcast TV and radio for educational purposes; it makes the best use of UCL’s ERA licence and is much easier than recording and labelling recordings.  From September it will be back with a better search, several channels archived permanently, and more:…

Teaching & Learning Services (TLS) is part of UCL Library Services and works with academics, teaching staff and administrators across UCL to help ensure that students have access to materials they need for their study. We work with departments to deliver the following services:

Online reading lists ensure students have seamless access to the resources on their reading lists. Academics, teaching staff or administrators can all be in control and can update lists, instantly, from wherever they are. Reading lists link to Moodle via the ‘Library resources’ block.
